Stokes was a pioneer of his time, facing discrimination, judgment, and even threats of violence all in the belief that he had what it took to become mayor of Cleveland and represent African Americans from his hometown and all over the nation. He stood his ground on issues and implemented what he felt would be best for his city and his people, no matter their race or economic status. Carl Stokes was the lighter of a torch, a beacon spreading the light of progress that was a turning point in the views and actions of Americans nationwide. That same light still burns bright today.
